Urumqi, formerly known as Dihua, is the political, economic, and cultural center of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Historically, it was a vital stop on the ancient Silk Road where Eastern and Western civilizations met. Today, Urumqi has become one of the most dynamic modern cities in northwest China. Economically, it relies on abundant oil, natural gas, and coal resources, forming an industrial system centered on petrochemicals, energy, machinery manufacturing, and textiles, while trade logistics and tourism services are growing rapidly. In terms of education, it hosts several higher education institutions such as Xinjiang University, Xinjiang Normal University, and Xinjiang Medical University. Among them, Xinjiang University is a national “Double First-Class” university, offering a wide range of programs and scholarship opportunities for international students. Culturally, Urumqi is a big family of 47 ethnic groups, including Han, Uygur, Kazakh, and Hui, creating a rich multicultural atmosphere. The city has a moderate pace of life and reasonable living costs, featuring modern shopping malls and international hotel chains alongside ethnic bazaars and night markets. For international students, Urumqi offers not only academic knowledge but also an immersive experience of unique Western China culture, broadening their global perspectives.
