Detailed introduction

Bortala Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture (Bortala for short) is located in the northwestern part of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, on the western edge of the Junggar Basin. Covering 27,200 km² with a permanent population of about 490,000, it has a long history as an important post on the northern route of the ancient Silk Road. Thirty-five ethnic groups, including Mongolian, Han, Uygur, and Kazakh, live together harmoniously, with Mongolian culture being especially prominent. The economy is based on agriculture and animal husbandry, boosted by border trade through the Alataw Pass, and tourism is rapidly growing—Sayram Lake, known as 'the last tear of the Atlantic,' is a national scenic area. For education, Bortala Vocational and Technical College offers Chinese language and vocational training for international students. The cost of living is low, the pace of life is relaxed, and the community is safe. The climate is temperate continental, dry with little rain, cold long winters, cool short summers, and large daily temperature differences—so warm clothing and sun protection are necessary. For international students interested in China's frontier regions, ethnic minority cultures, or cross-border trade studies, Bortala is a unique and promising destination.
