Covering an area of 53,186 km² and with a permanent population of 9.86 million, it is the northernmost megacity in China. Historically, Harbin rose due to the construction of the Chinese Eastern Railway and became an international trading port in the early 20th century, blending Chinese, Russian, Japanese, and European cultures. Many European-style buildings remain today, such as Central Street and Saint Sophia Cathedral, exuding exotic charm. Economically, Harbin was once a heavy industrial base and is now transforming into high-end equipment manufacturing, ice-snow tourism, and green food industries. In education, Harbin is home to prestigious universities including Harbin Institute of Technology (C9 League), Harbin Engineering University, Northeast Forestry University, and Heilongjiang University, with strong research capacity, especially in aerospace, naval engineering, and forestry. The cost of living is relatively low. Winter lasts up to 5 months with temperatures dropping to -30°C, but indoor heating is excellent; summers are cool, making it a summer resort. The city has convenient transportation with metro and bus networks, and an international airport connecting multiple countries.
