Detailed introduction

Dingxi City is located in central Gansu Province, at the transition zone between the Loess Plateau and the Tibetan Plateau, covering an area of approximately 19,610 square kilometers with a permanent population of 2.47 million. It is one of the important birthplaces of Chinese civilization, dotted with prehistoric sites such as Majiayao and Xindian cultures, and features the Lintao section of the Qin Great Wall's western starting point. As the largest potato planting and processing base in China, Dingxi is known as the 'Potato Capital of China,' and it also produces high-quality traditional Chinese medicinal herbs like Astragalus and Angelica, earning the title 'Millennium Medicine Village.' The economy is primarily based on agriculture and the Chinese medicine industry, with emerging sectors in new energy and cultural tourism. Educationally, it hosts Dingxi Teachers College and other institutions, but higher education resources are relatively limited. The pace of life is slow, and living costs are low—a bowl of beef noodles costs less than 10 yuan. The climate is dry with four distinct seasons and large temperature differences, so keeping moisturized and warm is important. Locals speak the Longzhong dialect of Central Plains Mandarin, but Mandarin is widely understood. For international students, Dingxi offers a unique immersion in northwestern culture, away from the hustle and bustle of big cities, ideal for focused academic study or short-term cultural exploration.
