Detailed introduction

Kaifeng, historically known as Bianjing or Dongjing, is located in the east-central part of Henan Province, on the south bank of the Yellow River. It is one of the first 24 nationally designated historical and cultural cities. As the capital of eight ancient dynasties, Kaifeng has over 4,100 years of city-building and capital history, nurturing the 'Song culture' that bridges the Han-Tang and Ming-Qing eras. During the Northern Song Dynasty, Kaifeng was the largest city in the world, vividly depicted in the painting 'Along the River During the Qingming Festival'. Today, cultural tourism is Kaifeng's pillar industry, with attractions like the Millennium City Park (Qingming Shanghe Yuan), Dragon Pavilion Park, and Daxiangguo Temple drawing visitors worldwide. Traditional industries such as food processing, textiles, and chemicals are well-established, while the city is also actively developing the digital economy and high-end manufacturing. In education, Henan University (a provincial key university) has its main campus in Kaifeng, offering international students Chinese language, traditional Chinese medicine, history, and other specialized programs through its International Education College. The cost of living is much lower than in first-tier cities, with monthly expenses around 2,000–3,000 RMB, making it ideal for budget-conscious students. The city has a relaxed pace, friendly residents, and good public security. The climate features four distinct seasons: hot and humid summers, and cold and dry winters. Overall, Kaifeng is a historically rich, culturally vibrant, convenient, and highly cost-effective city for international students.
