Detailed introduction

Zhaotong is a prefecture-level city under Yunnan Province, covering 23,021 square kilometers with a permanent population of about 4.8 million, classified as a large city type I. It lies in the transitional zone from the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau to the Sichuan Basin, with an average altitude of around 2,000 meters. The terrain is complex and diverse, with significant vertical climate variations, creating a unique landscape where 'a mountain has four seasons, and the weather differs within ten miles'. Historically, Zhaotong was a key node on the ancient 'Southern Silk Road', where Central Plains, Bashu, and Dian cultures merged. It also holds revolutionary heritage sites such as the 'Zhaxi Meeting' site. The economy is primarily based on agriculture (apples, gastrodia, potatoes), energy (hydropower, coal), and tourism. In recent years, it has been developing green energy and specialty agriculture. In terms of education, Zhaotong University is the main local undergraduate institution, offering various majors and gradually expanding international exchanges. Living costs are very low—rent, food, and transportation are far cheaper than in first-tier cities, making it suitable for budget-conscious international students. The locals are warm-hearted, and public security is good, providing a safe and friendly environment for studying and living.
