Detailed introduction

Songyuan is located in the central-west of Jilin Province, on the southern part of the Songnen Plain. Known as the “City of Oil” due to its abundant petroleum resources, it covers an area of 20,159 km² and has a permanent population of 2.09 million, classifying it as a large Type II city. The area has a long history dating back to the Liao and Jin dynasties, and modern development accelerated with the expansion of the Daqing oil field. Its economy is dominated by petrochemicals, agriculture, and tourism, producing large quantities of corn and rice, making it an important commercial grain base in Jilin Province. In terms of education, Songyuan has institutions such as Songyuan Vocational Technical College, but higher education resources are relatively limited. Culturally, the city is home to multiple ethnic groups, including Mongolians and Manchus, resulting in a unique blend of folk customs. The Chagan Lake winter fishing is a national intangible cultural heritage, attracting numerous tourists each year. The pace of life is slow and the cost of living is low, making it suitable for budget-conscious international students who want to experience authentic Northeast Chinese life. Winter temperatures can drop to -30°C, so proper cold-weather preparation is essential; summers are cool and pleasant. Urban infrastructure is adequate, but the level of internationalization is low, and English proficiency is not widespread, so students need a certain level of Chinese language ability.
