Detailed introduction

Zhanjiang, located in southwestern Guangdong Province on the eastern side of the Leizhou Peninsula, faces the South China Sea and is China's southernmost coastal city. Covering 11,692 km² with a permanent population of about 7.12 million, it is a third-tier megacity. With a long history, Zhanjiang was a key node on the Maritime Silk Road during the Han Dynasty and later served as a French leased territory (Kwangchouwan) in modern times, leaving behind unique French-style architecture. Its economy is driven by port logistics, marine fisheries, petrochemicals, and modern agriculture, hosting South China's largest deep-water port—Zhanjiang Port—as well as major projects like Baosteel Zhanjiang Iron and Steel Base and Sinopec Zhongke Refinery. In education, Guangdong Ocean University, a leading institution in marine sciences in South China, has its main campus here, along with Lingnan Normal University and Guangdong Medical University, offering diverse programs for international students. The city enjoys a warm, humid climate year-round, high greenery coverage, and China's largest mangrove nature reserve—Zhanjiang Mangrove National Nature Reserve. Living costs are lower than in Guangzhou or Shenzhen. Local cuisine features fresh seafood, white-cut chicken, and Zhanjiang charcoal-grilled oysters, with vibrant night markets. The main dialects are Leizhouhua (a Min branch) and Cantonese, but Mandarin is widely spoken, making daily communication easy for international students. The city is safe, with friendly locals, making it an ideal place to experience coastal life in southern China.
