Detailed introduction

Shizuishan is located at the northernmost tip of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, bordering the Yellow River to the east and the Helan Mountains to the west, serving as an important node connecting North and Northwest China. The city rose on the back of coal mining and was a key industrial base during China‘s First Five-Year Plan period, with coal extraction, thermal power generation, and steel metallurgy as its main industries. In the 21st century, Shizuishan has accelerated industrial restructuring by developing new materials, equipment manufacturing, and modern logistics, while implementing ecological restoration projects that transformed former coal mining subsidence areas into Xinghai Lake National Wetland Park—a green landmark of the city. In education, the city hosts Ningxia Institute of Science and Technology and several vocational colleges, offering programs in engineering, environmental science, and more for international students. The population is predominantly Han and Hui, with a strong Hui cultural presence and halal food widely available. The cost of living is low—rent, dining, and transportation are far cheaper than in first-tier cities. Winters are cold and dry, summers are cool, and the temperature difference between day and night is large, so warm clothing and hydration are essential. Overall, Shizuishan is suitable for international students who want to deeply explore the industrial transformation of northwest China, experience Hui culture, and study on a limited budget.
