Shangrao has a long history dating back to the Eastern Han Dynasty (circa 200 AD) when it was established as a county. It is the hometown of Zhu Xi, a renowned Neo-Confucian scholar of the Song Dynasty, and one of the birthplaces of Gan opera, a local form of Chinese opera. Today, Shangrao serves as the regional central city in northeastern Jiangxi Province, covering an area of 22,737 square kilometers with a permanent population of about 6.35 million, classifying it as a mega-city. Its economy is led by tourism, with attractions such as Mount Sanqing (a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site), Wuyuan (known as China's most beautiful countryside), and Guifeng (Turtle Peak) drawing visitors from around the world. Meanwhile, Shangrao is actively developing emerging industries including photovoltaics, auto parts, and non-ferrous metals, supported by a national-level economic and technological development zone. In education, Shangrao Normal University is the main local institution, and the city's proximity to higher education hubs like Nanchang and Hangzhou allows students to access regional academic resources conveniently.
