Program overview
Environmental Science sounds high-end, but it's actually very down-to-earth—it's about studying the problems with the water, air, and soil around us, and figuring out how to solve them. For example, how to treat wastewater from factories, where urban smog comes from, and how to sort and recycle trash more effectively are all things you'll learn in this major. Core courses include Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Monitoring, Principles of Environmental Engineering, Ecology, and Environmental Law. You'll learn how to use instruments to measure pollutants, how to design wastewater treatment systems, and understand the scientific basis behind environmental policies. Chinese universities have a clear advantage in this field: many schools offer real-world case studies and internship bases. Because China has developed rapidly over the past few decades and faces diverse environmental issues—from sandstorms in the north to water pollution in the south—you'll find plenty of living research material. Plus, many universities collaborate with environmental companies and government agencies, allowing you to learn while practicing. This major is perfect for students who are curious about nature, enjoy hands-on experiments, and want to contribute to solving real-world problems. If you don't mind occasionally going out for field sampling or working with beakers and bottles in the lab, Environmental Science can be a lot of fun.
