Program overview
Forestry may sound "green," but it's actually a very hardcore practical science. Simply put, it's about learning how to interact with forests — from planting, nurturing, and protecting trees, to scientifically utilizing forest resources without harming the environment. Core courses include Dendrology (identifying various trees), Forest Ecology (interactions between trees and the environment), Silviculture (how to grow a forest well), Forest Management (planning and managing forests), Forest Protection (preventing pests, diseases, and fires), as well as Surveying, Remote Sensing, and Geographic Information Systems (using high-tech to observe forests). Chinese universities have unique features in this field, such as Beijing Forestry University and Nanjing Forestry University, which have experimental forest farms on campus and offer plenty of field practice opportunities. You can personally measure trees and design afforestation plans. This major is suitable for students who love nature, don't mind wind and sun, have strong hands-on skills, and are passionate about environmental protection. If you enjoy hiking and observing plants, you'll find it very interesting.
