Program overview
Gemology and Materials Science, simply put, is the study of the "life story" of gemstones—from their formation, identification, and processing to being crafted into jewelry. You might think this major sounds "high-end," but it's actually very hands-on and practical. Core courses include crystal optics, gem identification (using microscopes, refractometers, and other instruments to examine internal features), diamond grading (the 4Cs), gem processing (cutting and polishing), jewelry design (hand-drawing and computer modeling), and fundamentals of materials science (understanding the physical and chemical properties of gemstones). Who is it for? If you have a natural curiosity about beautiful stones, enjoy working with instruments, or have an interest in art and design, this major will be right up your alley. Chinese universities have a unique edge in this field—for example, China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) boasts a globally renowned gemology program with its own Gemological Institute (GIC), where students can earn internationally recognized certifications. Plus, as China is one of the largest gemstone consumer markets, you'll have access to real business cases and industry resources on campus.
