Program overview
Aquatic Science and Technology is all about raising fish beautifully, designing stunning aquariums, and keeping aquatic life healthy. You might think it's just "fish farming," but it actually blends biology, ecology, chemistry, and artistic design. Core courses include ichthyology, aquatic ecology, ornamental aquaculture, aquascape design, water quality control technology, and aquatic disease prevention. Beyond theory, you'll get plenty of hands-on experience: designing aquascapes, managing recirculating water systems, and treating fish diseases. This major is perfect for those who love biology, have patience, and possess a creative streak. If you kept goldfish as a kid or are fascinated by coral reefs in aquariums, this will be right up your alley. Chinese universities have unique advantages here: for instance, Shanghai Ocean University and Huazhong Agricultural University's fisheries colleges have dedicated aquatic labs and internship bases, and some schools partner with large aquariums for direct internships. Plus, China is one of the world's largest exporters of ornamental fish, with leading techniques for species like goldfish and koi, so you'll gain plenty of practical experience.
