Program overview
Fishery Resources is a sub-discipline of Aquaculture under the broader field of Agriculture. It focuses on the distribution, growth, and reproduction patterns of aquatic organisms such as fish, shrimp, crabs, and shellfish, as well as scientific methods for fishing and aquaculture. Core courses include Fishery Resource Assessment, Fish Ecology, Aquaculture Technology, Marine Ecology, and Fishery Management. You will learn to use mathematical models to estimate fish populations, design conservation plans to prevent overfishing, and work with GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and remote sensing technology to monitor aquatic environments. This major is ideal for students who love nature, are interested in marine or freshwater life, and don't mind going out to sea for sampling or spending time in the lab. Chinese universities have unique advantages in this field, such as the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, Shanghai Ocean University, and Ocean University of China. These institutions are located near fishing grounds like the East China Sea and Yellow Sea, offering ample field research opportunities. Moreover, China is the world's largest aquaculture producer, providing rich practical resources.
