Program overview
Pesticide science might sound a bit "chemical," but it's actually deeply connected to our daily lives—from insecticides in the fields to pesticide residue testing on our dining tables. Simply put, this field focuses on how to use pesticides safely and effectively while minimizing their impact on the environment and human health. You'll study pesticide synthesis and formulation processing, pesticide toxicology (e.g., how pesticides kill pests but remain relatively safe for humans), pesticide environmental behavior (e.g., how pesticides break down in soil and water), and pesticide residue analysis and detection techniques. Core courses include organic chemistry, biochemistry, plant pathology, entomology, and pesticide formulation science. If you enjoy hands-on lab work, have an interest in chemistry and biology, and care about agriculture and environmental protection, this major is a great fit. China boasts several top universities in this field, such as China Agricultural University, Central China Normal University, and Nankai University, which have national key laboratories and long-standing research strengths, especially in green pesticides and biopesticides, leading internationally.
