Program overview
Plant Pathology is a graduate major under Agricultural Sciences, focusing on why plants get sick, how diseases spread, and how to effectively control them. Simply put, it's like being a "doctor for plants." You'll learn about various pathogens (such as fungi, bacteria, viruses, and nematodes), understand how they infect plants, and how the environment influences disease outbreaks. Core courses include Plant Pathogenology, Plant Disease Epidemiology, Molecular Plant Pathology, and Principles of Plant Disease Control. There are many lab sessions where you'll use microscopes, molecular detection techniques, and even go to the field for sampling. This major suits students interested in plants, microorganisms, and agriculture. If you enjoy hands-on experiments, observing natural phenomena, or want to contribute to solving global food issues, it's a great fit. Chinese universities have strong practical foundations in this field—for example, China Agricultural University, Nanjing Agricultural University, and Northwest A&F University have long-established crop disease databases and field trial stations, offering rich research resources.
