Program overview
The Tea Science major sounds very "Chinese," but its content is actually quite practical. Simply put, it's about studying everything related to tea: from how tea plants are cultivated and managed, to how tea leaves are processed and tasted, to how tea culture is spread and tea products are sold. Core courses include Tea Plant Cultivation, Tea Processing, Tea Biochemistry, Tea Evaluation and Inspection, and Tea Culture. You'll also learn practical skills, such as judging tea quality by appearance, aroma, and taste. China is the hometown of tea, and many universities have deep expertise in tea science, such as Zhejiang University, Anhui Agricultural University, and Hunan Agricultural University. They not only have experimental tea gardens and processing workshops but also cooperate with domestic and international tea companies. This major is suitable for students who are interested in plants, food, or culture; don't mind working in the fields (e.g., picking tea, pruning tea bushes); and are willing to sit down and savor tea while studying details. If you enjoy hands-on work, love nature, and are curious about Eastern culture, Tea Science is a great choice.
