Program overview
Mycology Science and Engineering is all about working with various fungi—from the shiitake and enoki mushrooms you love, to the yeast used in bread-making, and even the Penicillium that produces antibiotics. This major falls under the plant production category in agriculture, but it's not just about growing mushrooms. Core courses include mycology, edible fungi cultivation, fungal genetics and breeding, fermentation engineering, and fungal resource utilization. You'll learn how to culture strains in the lab, design factory-scale production processes, and extract useful substances from fungi. China is a major producer of edible fungi, and many universities (such as Jilin Agricultural University and the Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences) have strong mycology research teams, complete with specialized fungus museums and germplasm banks. If you enjoy hands-on lab work, are curious about the microbial world, or want to learn a practical skill applicable to agriculture, food, and medicine, this major is a great fit.
