Program overview
Composite Materials and Engineering is essentially about studying how to mix two or more materials (like carbon fiber and resin, glass fiber and metal) to create something lighter, stronger, and more durable than the original single material. You might wonder: Why are airplane wings made of carbon fiber? Why are wind turbine blades so long yet never break? The answers lie in this major. Core courses include Fundamentals of Materials Science, Principles of Composite Materials, Polymer Matrix Composites, Metal Matrix Composites, Ceramic Matrix Composites, Mechanics of Composite Materials, and Composite Materials Processing and Equipment. You'll also learn how to design, manufacture, and test these materials—for example, simulating material properties on a computer or making a composite panel by hand in the lab. This major suits students who are hands-on and enjoy interdisciplinary thinking—because you need to understand chemistry, physics, and engineering all at once. Chinese universities have unique strengths in this field: Beihang University, Harbin Institute of Technology, and Northwestern Polytechnical University excel in aerospace composites, while Donghua University has an edge in textile composites. Many schools have advanced labs and even production lines in partnership with companies, so you can experience real manufacturing processes.
