Program overview
French interpreting is a popular direction under the Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI), mainly training you to quickly and accurately switch between Chinese and French orally. The courses are not about memorizing words or learning grammar, but about real, hands-on practice: consecutive interpreting, simultaneous interpreting, sight translation, simulated international conferences, business negotiations, and diplomatic interpreting. Core courses include Fundamentals of Interpreting, Thematic Interpreting (economy, law, technology, culture, etc.), Interpreting Theory and Techniques, French Speech and Debate, and more. Many Chinese universities (such as Beijing Foreign Studies University, Shanghai International Studies University, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies) have strong faculty and practical resources in this field, often inviting frontline interpreters to teach, and even offering opportunities to intern at the United Nations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or large enterprises. This major is suitable for students with a solid foundation in French (generally C1 or above), quick reflexes, strong stress tolerance, and a passion for cross-cultural communication. If you enjoy challenges and thrive on moving effortlessly between two languages, this is the place for you.
