Program overview
Polymer Materials and Engineering, simply put, is the study of "macromolecular" materials such as plastics, rubber, fibers, coatings, and adhesives. The phone case you use daily, the water bottle, tires, and even contact lenses—all rely on polymer materials. This major teaches you two things: first, how to synthesize these materials from raw materials like petroleum and biomass (e.g., polypropylene, nylon); second, how to process them into useful products (e.g., injection molding, blown film, spinning). Core courses include polymer chemistry, polymer physics, material characterization methods, and principles of polymer processing. There are many lab sessions where you'll personally synthesize polymers, test mechanical properties, and design formulations. China has a strong industrial base in this field, with huge plastics and rubber clusters in Zhejiang, Guangdong, and Shandong. Many universities (such as Sichuan University, South China University of Technology, and Beijing University of Chemical Technology) have advanced lab equipment and close ties with enterprises. This major suits students who enjoy hands-on experiments, have an interest in both chemistry and physics, and want to solve real-world problems. If you're interested in cutting-edge areas like eco-friendly materials, biodegradable plastics, or new energy battery separators, this major provides a great starting point.
