Program overview
The Master's program in English Interpreting, simply put, teaches you how to quickly and accurately switch between Chinese and English, especially in high-pressure settings like conferences, negotiations, and speeches. Core courses include consecutive interpreting (listen and then interpret), simultaneous interpreting (interpret while listening), sight translation (oral translation from a written text), note-taking for interpreting, and cross-cultural communication. You'll also learn how to handle unexpected situations, such as fast-talking speakers, heavy accents, or specialized topics. This program is ideal for students with quick language reflexes, strong stress tolerance, and an interest in international affairs and business culture. Chinese universities have unique strengths in interpreting education—for example, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Shanghai International Studies University, and Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. Many instructors are senior interpreters certified by the United Nations or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and classes feature extensive simulated conferences and real projects, with opportunities to intern at international conferences.
