Program overview
Functional Materials is a subfield of Materials Science and Engineering under the Engineering category. Simply put, it studies materials with 'special abilities'—such as conductive plastics, light-emitting crystals, and hydrogen-storing alloys. What you learn is diverse but fascinating: from quantum mechanics to solid-state physics, from material synthesis to performance testing. Core courses include Fundamentals of Materials Science, Physical Properties of Materials, Preparation and Processing of Functional Materials, and Modern Materials Analysis Techniques. Chinese universities have unique strengths in this field. For example, Tsinghua, Zhejiang University, and Huazhong University of Science and Technology excel in new energy materials; Harbin Institute of Technology has deep expertise in aerospace functional materials; and Shanghai Jiao Tong University does great work in biomedical materials. If you enjoy hands-on experiments, don't mind physics and chemistry, and want to be part of technologies that change the world (like making electric cars go farther or chips smaller), this major is a great fit.
