Program overview
Area and Country Studies might sound a bit highbrow, but it's really about "specializing in one place." You pick a country or region that interests you (like Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, etc.), and dive deep into its language, history, society, politics, economy, culture, and more. It's not purely a language major, nor just international relations—it blends everything together so you truly understand how people in that place think and operate. Core courses include: the target country's language (e.g., Thai, Arabic, Swahili), area and country research methods, international relations theory, comparative politics, cross-cultural communication, economic geography, etc. Many Chinese universities have their own strengths in specific regional studies—for example, Yunnan University in Southeast Asian studies, Shanghai International Studies University in Middle Eastern studies, and Beijing Foreign Studies University in African studies, all with strong faculty and resources. This major is perfect for students who are intensely curious about a particular country or region and willing to invest time in deep understanding. If you already know a less-commonly taught language, or you're originally from a certain region (like Southeast Asia or Central Asia), you'll have an edge. At the graduate level, you'll do a lot of literature reading and fieldwork, writing papers is routine, but you'll also have plenty of opportunities to attend international conferences and exchange programs in the target country.
