Program overview
Sinhala is the official language of Sri Lanka and an important cultural carrier in South Asia. This program mainly teaches you listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation skills in Sinhala, while also providing an in-depth understanding of Sri Lanka's history, religion, and social customs. Core courses include Basic Sinhala, Advanced Sinhala, Oral Conversation, Grammar Analysis, Translation Theory and Practice, and Selected Readings in Sri Lankan Literature. Very few universities in China offer this major—for example, Beijing Foreign Studies University—with strong faculty and opportunities to study abroad in Sri Lanka. It's ideal for students curious about South Asian culture, who enjoy challenging niche languages, and are willing to patiently hone their language skills. If you aspire to work in cross-cultural communication, diplomacy, or international trade, this major gives you a unique starting point.
