Program overview
Greek is a foreign language and literature major that focuses on modern Greek (with a foundation in classical Greek) and Greek culture. Core courses include Basic Greek, Greek Listening and Speaking, Selected Readings in Greek Literature, Greek History and Culture, and Translation Theory and Practice. Chinese universities such as Beijing Foreign Studies University and Shanghai International Studies University offer this program, with faculty often returning from studies in Greece, and some schools have exchange programs with the University of Athens. It suits students who are sensitive to languages, love ancient Greek mythology or philosophy, and are willing to take on the challenge of a less commonly taught language. If you have the patience to tackle grammar and enjoy memorizing vocabulary, this major will give you a great sense of accomplishment.
