Program overview
Biomaterials is an interdisciplinary field combining materials science and medicine. Simply put, it studies which materials can be safely placed inside the human body—such as artificial joints, heart stents, dental implants, and absorbable sutures. You'll learn the basics of materials science (e.g., properties of polymers, metals, ceramics), biochemistry (how the body interacts with materials), biomaterials science (specific characteristics of various medical materials), and tissue engineering (using materials to guide cells into forming new tissues). Core courses also include practical topics like Biomechanics and Medical Device Regulations. Many Chinese universities have unique strengths in this field, such as close collaboration with hospitals, allowing you to encounter real clinical needs in the lab. This major suits students who are interested in both medicine and materials, enjoy hands-on work, and don't mind experiments.
