Program overview
This is a graduate-level program in Spanish Language and Literature, designed for students who already have some Spanish foundation and wish to delve deeper into the language, literature, or culture. In Chinese universities, the Spanish major typically focuses on three areas: first, advanced language skills such as interpretation, translation, and linguistic theory; second, literary and cultural studies, including reading classic novels and poetry from Spanish-speaking countries, analyzing the Latin American Boom, the Spanish Golden Age, etc.; third, regional and country-specific knowledge, covering the politics, economy, and society of Spanish-speaking nations. Core courses include Advanced Spanish, Translation Theory and Practice, History of Spanish-speaking Literatures, Latin American Cultural Studies, and Introduction to Linguistics. Chinese universities have the advantage of many faculty members with overseas study backgrounds and exchange programs with Spanish and Latin American institutions. Additionally, due to frequent economic and trade exchanges between China and the Spanish-speaking world, classes incorporate many real-world cases. This program suits students who are sensitive to language, enjoy reading, and are willing to refine details, as well as practical-minded individuals aiming for cross-cultural work.
