Program overview
The New Energy Materials and Devices program is essentially about studying how to efficiently convert clean energy like solar and wind into electricity, or store electricity for later use. The core is materials—such as the cathode and anode materials for lithium batteries, light-absorbing materials for solar cells, and catalysts for fuel cells. You will learn solid-state physics, electrochemistry, fundamentals of materials science, and applied courses like lithium-ion batteries, photovoltaic devices, and supercapacitors. There are many lab sessions where you'll assemble batteries and test performance. This program suits students who enjoy hands-on work, have an interest in both chemistry and physics, and especially those who want to help solve energy problems. Chinese universities invest heavily in this field, and many have cooperative labs with companies like CATL and BYD, giving you access to cutting-edge technology.
