Program overview
Metallurgical Engineering might sound a bit "hardcore," but simply put, it's about how to "extract" metals from ores and process them into usable materials. You'll learn about metal extraction, refining, alloy design, heat treatment, and more. Core courses include physical chemistry, metallurgical principles, metal materials science, iron and steelmaking processes, and nonferrous metallurgy. This major suits students who enjoy hands-on experiments, don't mind chemistry and physics, and want to solve real industrial problems. China leads the world in steel and nonferrous metal production, and many universities (such as Northeastern University, University of Science and Technology Beijing, and Central South University) have strong metallurgy programs with excellent lab facilities and school-enterprise cooperation projects, giving you exposure to real factory processes.
