Program overview
Fashion Design and Engineering, simply put, teaches you how to make clothes from scratch — and not just make them, but make them look good, feel comfortable, and sell well. This major is half art, half engineering: the art part includes fashion design, color matching, trend analysis; the engineering part involves garment structure (how to turn flat fabric into 3D clothing), fabric properties (which fabrics breathe, which resist wrinkles), garment techniques (sewing, ironing, quality inspection), etc. Core courses include Basics of Fashion Design, Garment Structure Design, Textile Materials, Garment CAD (computer pattern making), Garment Production Management, Fashion Marketing, etc. What kind of students is it suitable for? If you have a passion for fashion, enjoy making things with your hands, don't mind math and logic (like calculating fabric usage, analyzing body measurements), and are willing to understand the whole process from design sketch to finished garment on the shelf, then this major will be right up your alley. Chinese universities have unique strengths in this field, such as Donghua University, Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, and Zhejiang Sci-Tech University. They are closely connected with the domestic garment industry; many teachers have industry experience, and the labs have industrial-grade sewing machines and 3D body scanners, allowing you to get hands-on with the latest tools in the industry.
