Program overview
The Fine Arts and Calligraphy program (graduate level) is a distinctive direction within the art discipline, especially in Chinese universities. It is not just about learning techniques but also a deep cultural immersion. You will systematically study Chinese painting (landscape, flowers and birds, figures), calligraphy (seal, clerical, regular, running, cursive scripts), seal carving, and art history and theory, while also engaging with contemporary art creation methods. Core courses include "Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Materials and Techniques," "Calligraphy Aesthetics," "Topics in Chinese Art History," and "Methodology of Artistic Creation." Many schools also arrange sketching trips, museum visits, and master workshops, allowing you to directly experience original works. This program is ideal for those who truly love ink and brush and are willing to spend time honing their craft—you don't necessarily need to have practiced calligraphy or painting since childhood, but you need patience and curiosity. Institutions like the China Academy of Art, Central Academy of Fine Arts, and Chinese National Academy of Arts offer top-tier faculty and traditional resources in calligraphy and Chinese painting, such as collections of stele rubbings and guidance from intangible cultural heritage inheritors—advantages that are hard to replicate abroad.
