Program overview
Product design may sound high-end, but it's essentially about figuring out how to create things that are both functional and beautiful. From the phone in your hand and the chair you sit on, to smart home appliances and medical devices — these are all battlegrounds for product designers. Core courses include design thinking, ergonomics, materials and processes, 3D modeling (like Rhino, SolidWorks), and user research. You'll also learn to sketch, build models, and render visuals using software. A distinct advantage in Chinese universities is the close collaboration between schools and industry — for example, Jiangnan University, Hunan University, and Tsinghua Academy of Arts & Design. Students get to work on real projects and even directly coordinate with factories for prototyping. This major suits those who enjoy hands-on work, are sensitive to life's details, and want to be creative without losing touch with reality. If you often wonder 'why is this designed this way?' or 'how can it be improved?', product design will be right up your alley.
