Program overview
The Fashion and Apparel Design program, simply put, teaches you how to turn ideas from your mind into clothes and accessories you can wear. You'll learn not only how to sketch designs, select fabrics, and create patterns and samples, but also understand fashion history, how trends emerge, and how to take a garment from design sketch to store shelves. Core courses include Fashion Design Basics, Draping, Fabrics and Materials, Fashion History, Fashion Illustration, Computer-Aided Design (e.g., using CLO 3D for virtual garments), and Brand Planning. This major suits those passionate about styling, love hands-on creation, and have a keen eye for color and shape. Chinese universities have a distinct advantage here: many have close ties with garment industry hubs (like Hangzhou, Guangzhou, Shenzhen), giving you access to real-world processes from fabric markets to factory production, and even opportunities to participate in fashion weeks or brand collaborations. Plus, China offers unique resources in traditional crafts (such as embroidery and silk) and modern fast-fashion supply chains, making the learning experience truly engaging.
