Program overview
New Media Art is the hybrid child of art and technology—simply put, it teaches you to create using tools like computers, cameras, and sensors. Core courses include digital video production, interactive installation design, virtual reality art, sound design, basic programming (e.g., Processing or TouchDesigner), with a foundation in art history and media theory. Chinese universities have a unique take on this field—for instance, China Academy of Art and Central Academy of Fine Arts run experimental studios that combine traditional culture like ink painting and opera with digital art, which is pretty cool. It’s perfect for students who love tinkering with new stuff, aren’t satisfied with traditional painting, and are willing to write a bit of code or solder circuits. You don’t need to be a tech wizard, but you should have curiosity and a willingness to cross disciplines.
