Program overview
This is a graduate-level program focusing on traditional Chinese opera (such as Peking Opera, Kunqu Opera, Yue Opera, etc.) and folk art forms (like cross-talk, storytelling, clapper talk, etc.). You will not only learn how to perform but also how to write, direct, and research. Core courses include opera performance techniques, folk art creation and performance, history of Chinese opera, opera music, stage design, and opera aesthetics. Many Chinese universities, such as the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts and the Central Academy of Drama, offer strong faculty and abundant practical opportunities, even direct collaboration with theater troupes. It is suitable for students who are passionate about traditional Chinese culture and have some performance background or theoretical foundation in the arts. If you enjoy hands-on practice and are interested in Chinese historical stories and folk art, this program will be very engaging.
