Program overview
Art Studies (graduate level) is not about teaching you to paint or play an instrument, but about helping you understand art from a higher perspective—where it comes from, why it matters, and how it is evaluated. You will study art history (from Dunhuang murals to contemporary installation art), art theory (aesthetics, semiotics, cultural studies), art criticism (how to write insightful exhibition reviews), and curatorial practice (how to plan an exhibition). Core courses include Chinese Art History, Western Art Theory, Methodology of Art Criticism, and Museology. A distinctive feature of Chinese universities in this field is that many institutions leverage local resources—for example, Central Academy of Fine Arts and China Academy of Art have strong traditional art research teams, while Peking University and Tsinghua University emphasize interdisciplinary and theoretical depth. This program is ideal for students who love visiting galleries, ponder the social and cultural contexts behind art, and are not satisfied with just 'looking nice' but want to ask 'why.' If you are curious about visual culture, cultural heritage, and the contemporary art ecosystem, this major will be a great fit.
