Program overview
Preventive medicine is a very "down-to-earth" major in medicine. Unlike clinical medicine, which directly prescribes drugs and performs surgeries for patients, it takes a population-based approach to study how to keep people from getting sick or reducing illness. Core courses include epidemiology (the "detective science" of tracking disease spread), health statistics (letting data speak), environmental health (effects of air, water, and soil on health), occupational health (work environment and health), nutrition and food hygiene (eating for health), and child and adolescent health (caring for the next generation). It suits students who are interested in population health, enjoy analyzing data, have a sense of social responsibility, and don't mind working with government agencies. Chinese universities have unique advantages in this field—for example, many schools arrange internships at local CDC centers, where students participate in real outbreak investigations or health promotion activities, offering rich practical opportunities.
