Program overview
Pathogen Biology is a graduate program under Basic Medicine. Simply put, it studies the "bad guys" that make us sick—bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, etc. You'll learn what they look like, how they invade the human body, how they evade the immune system, and how we can fight them with drugs or vaccines. Core courses include Medical Microbiology, Medical Immunology, Parasitology, Molecular Pathogeny, Infection and Immunity, etc. There are many lab sessions, such as culturing bacteria, performing PCR tests, and animal model infections—perfect for students who enjoy hands-on work and are curious about infectious diseases and immune mechanisms. Chinese universities have strong practical resources in this field, such as P3/P4 biosafety labs where you can directly study highly pathogenic pathogens (e.g., SARS-CoV-2, Mycobacterium tuberculosis). Additionally, China has extensive experience in controlling tropical diseases like malaria and schistosomiasis, which is especially attractive to international students from developing countries.
