Program overview
Oral medicine is essentially the upgraded version of 'going to the dentist' — it's not just about fillings and extractions, but also includes oral cancer surgery, orthodontics, dental implants, periodontal treatment, and more. Core courses include Oral Anatomy and Physiology, Oral Histopathology, Oral Medicine, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Prosthodontics, and Orthodontics. You'll learn how to perform root canals under a microscope, design dentures that make patients smile naturally, and even use 3D printing to create implant guides. Chinese universities have a clear advantage in this field: an enormous volume of clinical cases. For example, during internships at affiliated hospitals, you might see dozens of patients a day, from simple cleanings to complex jaw fractures. Plus, China is advancing rapidly in digital dentistry (like intraoral scanning, CAD/CAM restorations) and implant technology, with many schools equipped with dedicated digital labs. This major suits students who are hands-on, detail-oriented, patient, and comfortable working closely with patients. If you enjoy crafts (like carving or painting), prosthodontics and orthodontics will be especially interesting.
