Program overview
Ophthalmic Optics is a specialized branch of clinical medicine focused on eye health. Simply put, it teaches you how to help people see clearly, comfortably, and for longer periods. The first half of the curriculum is similar to general clinical medicine, covering basics like human anatomy, physiology, and pathology. The second half dives into core subjects such as ophthalmology, optometry, refractive surgery, binocular vision, and low vision rehabilitation. You'll also learn how to perform refraction and prescribe glasses, fit contact lenses, and diagnose common eye conditions (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, cataracts, glaucoma, etc.). Chinese universities have a clear advantage in this field: due to China's very high myopia rate (especially among adolescents), clinical cases are abundant, giving you exposure to a wide range of real-world cases during internships. Additionally, many Chinese universities have advanced optometry training centers and affiliated eye hospitals, offering plenty of hands-on opportunities. This program suits students who are meticulous, patient, enjoy interacting with people, and have an interest in both optics and medicine. If you find “helping people see the world clearly” deeply rewarding, this major is a great fit.
