Program overview
Ultrasound medicine is a graduate specialty under clinical medicine that focuses on using ultrasound to diagnose and treat the human body. Simply put, you learn to operate ultrasound equipment and interpret images to identify organ issues—such as liver cysts, heart valve lesions, or fetal development. Core courses include fundamentals of ultrasound physics, abdominal ultrasound diagnosis, cardiac ultrasound, obstetric and gynecologic ultrasound, vascular ultrasound, and interventional ultrasound techniques. You'll also study the latest advances like contrast-enhanced ultrasound, elastography, and AI-assisted diagnosis. This specialty suits students who are hands-on, detail-oriented, patient, and enjoy direct communication with patients. Many Chinese medical schools have advanced ultrasound departments with high patient volumes—for example, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Zhongshan Hospital affiliated with Fudan University, and West China Hospital. During graduate studies, you'll encounter numerous real cases and gain plenty of hands-on experience. For international students interested in diagnostic imaging but wanting to avoid excessive radiation, ultrasound is an excellent choice.
