Program overview
Pediatric surgery is a clinical discipline dedicated to surgical diseases in children, from newborns to adolescents. Unlike adult surgery, children are not just smaller adults—their organs are still developing, their metabolism is faster, and their responses to medications and surgery differ significantly. This specialty covers a wide range of topics: core courses include pediatric surgery, pediatric anesthesia, pediatric intensive care, pediatric imaging, as well as foundational subjects like embryology and growth and development. You will learn how to manage congenital anomalies (e.g., cleft lip and palate, congenital heart disease), trauma, tumors (e.g., neuroblastoma), infections, and other surgical issues unique to children. Many medical schools in China have strong pediatric surgery programs, such as the Children's Hospital of Fudan University, Beijing Children's Hospital, and Shanghai Children's Medical Center. These institutions offer abundant clinical cases and a high volume of surgeries, giving international students exposure to a wide variety of complex conditions. Who is this program suitable for? First, you need to genuinely enjoy working with children and have patience and empathy. Second, strong manual dexterity is essential, as pediatric surgery demands extreme precision. Third, you must handle stress well, since you'll be dealing with young lives and anxious parents.
