Program overview
Ophthalmology is an important branch of clinical medicine. Simply put, it studies how to diagnose, treat, and prevent eye diseases. During graduate studies, you will delve into the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the eye, as well as clinical management of various eye conditions. Core courses include fundamentals of ophthalmology, optometry, glaucoma, cataracts, retinal diseases, ocular trauma, and refractive surgery. This specialty is ideal for those who are patient with fine operations, have steady hands, and enjoy interacting with patients. Many affiliated hospitals of Chinese medical schools have large ophthalmology centers, such as Beijing Tongren Hospital and Shanghai Eye Disease Prevention and Treatment Center, with high surgical volumes. During clinical rotations, you will encounter a wide range of real cases—from common myopia to complex retinal diseases—allowing you to gain experience quickly. Moreover, China has advanced technologies in refractive surgery like femtosecond laser and ICL implantation, offering international students the chance to learn cutting-edge practical skills.
