Program overview
Surveying and Mapping Engineering may sound hardcore, but simply put, it's about learning how to use various high-tech tools to give the Earth a "checkup" and create models. You'll study surveying, geodesy, photogrammetry and remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Navigation Satellite Systems (like China's BeiDou and the US's GPS), as well as practical skills like engineering surveying and drone mapping. Core courses include Error Theory and Data Processing, Digital Mapping, Remote Sensing Image Processing, and Spatial Databases. This major is especially suitable for students who enjoy math and physics while also being interested in computers and maps. If you often study navigation routes, play with drones, or are curious about how satellite photos become 3D models, Surveying and Mapping Engineering will be very appealing. Chinese universities have a clear advantage in this field: the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System is one of the three global systems, and many universities have dedicated BeiDou labs where students can access the latest satellite positioning technology. Additionally, China is at the forefront of drone mapping and LiDAR, with courses offering plenty of hands-on practice, such as using a drone to fly over a campus and generate a 3D model.
