Program overview
Microbial and Biochemical Pharmacy is a secondary discipline under Pharmacy. Simply put, it uses microorganisms (like bacteria and fungi) and biotechnology (such as genetic engineering and cell culture) to develop drugs. You may work with antibiotics, vaccines, antibody drugs, insulin, and other biologics. Core courses include microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetic engineering, fermentation engineering, pharmacology, and drug analysis. If you enjoy hands-on lab work and are curious about questions like "how to make microorganisms produce drugs" or "how to engineer cells to treat diseases," this major is a great fit. Chinese universities have unique strengths in this field—for example, China Pharmaceutical University, Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, and Peking University. Many labs collaborate directly with pharmaceutical companies, giving you exposure to real R&D projects. Plus, China's biopharmaceutical production is growing rapidly, with relatively new lab equipment—a solid choice for international students who want to learn technology.
