Program overview
Acupuncture and Tuina (massage) is one of the most hands-on specialties in traditional Chinese medicine. Simply put, you learn how to use silver needles to stimulate acupoints and apply manual techniques to treat illnesses or promote health. Core courses include Basic Theory of TCM, Meridian and Acupoint Studies, Acupuncture and Moxibustion Techniques, Tuina Manipulation, and TCM Diagnostics. You'll also study modern medical basics like anatomy and physiology, because precise knowledge of the human body is essential for needling and massage. Chinese universities have a natural advantage in this field—for example, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine all have affiliated hospitals and clinical training bases. From their sophomore year, students can follow teachers to see patients and practice techniques. This major suits students who are interested in TCM culture, enjoy hands-on work, and have patience and empathy. If you find Western surgery too invasive and want to learn a skill that truly helps relieve people's pain, this major will be a great fit.
