Program overview
Formulaology, simply put, is the study of 'how to prescribe formulas.' Unlike Chinese materia medica, which focuses on single herbs, this field teaches you how to combine multiple herbs into a formula so they work synergistically for better therapeutic effects. For example, why is the famous 'Mahuang Decoction' effective for colds? What role does each herb play? How can modifications treat different conditions? These are the questions formulaology addresses. Core courses include: Fundamentals of Formulaology (principles of formula composition and compatibility), Selected Classic Formulas (from 'Treatise on Cold Damage' to Qing dynasty classics), Formula Compatibility and Modern Research (analyzing active ingredients and mechanisms using scientific methods), and Clinical Formulaology (learning to select and apply formulas based on specific diseases). Chinese universities have deep expertise in formulaology. Institutions like Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine all have national-level key disciplines in formulaology. Many professors are themselves renowned clinicians who share real case experiences in class. This major is ideal for students passionate about TCM theory, who enjoy logical analysis (since composing formulas is like solving math problems with compatibility rules), and who are willing to conduct experiments (e.g., validating formula effects using animal models). If you aim to pursue TCM research or clinical work, formulaology is an essential core foundation.
