Program overview
Aesthetics is a research direction under philosophy, simply put, it studies "what is beauty" and "why people find things beautiful." You will learn core courses such as the history of Western aesthetics (from Plato to Kant and Hegel), Chinese aesthetics (e.g., Taoist aesthetics, Zen aesthetics), philosophy of art, and aesthetic psychology. Chinese universities have a unique advantage in aesthetics: many schools integrate traditional Chinese arts (like calligraphy, gardens, and opera) into aesthetic theories. For example, Peking University, Fudan University, and Nanjing University all have strong traditions in aesthetics. This major is especially suitable for students who enjoy thinking, have a passion for art and literature, and are not satisfied with just surface-level observations. If you often find yourself asking, "Why does this painting move me?" or "Why does this design look good?" then aesthetics might fascinate you.
